What is Micro-Needling?

July 4, 2016 by Gregg Bessette

what is micro-needling?

Have you been searching for a cutting-edge new procedure that can provide effective skin rejuvenation without chemicals, surgery, or extensive downtime? Micro-needling just might be the state-of-the-art treatment you’ve been looking for.

Also referred to as skin needling and collagen induction therapy (CIT), micro-needling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that uses fine needles to stimulate healing and cellular renewal. These needles create micro-injuries that are large enough to trigger your body’s healing response but small enough that there is minimal downtime and little to no scarring involved with the procedure. Unlike other treatments that stimulate the body’s natural healing process, micro-needling leaves the epidermis entirely intact.

As part of this healing response, growth factors, blood, and oxygen enrich the treatment area. While this causes the skin to become somewhat red and sensitive at first, as it heals it develops a beautiful, youthful glow. This is because these growth factors are rebuilding and enriching your skin on its deepest levels. Essential structural proteins like collagen and elastin add extra volume to loose and wrinkled skin.

Because micro-needling encourages overall healing and rejuvenation, it can be used to improve a wide variety of cosmetic conditions, including:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Loose skin
  • Sun damage
  • Scars
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks

Micro-needling is gentle enough to be used even on sensitive areas like the face, neck, and stomach.

In addition to addressing specific cosmetic issues, this treatment can be used successfully in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures to increase their effectiveness.

One of the things patients love most about micro-needling is the comfort and security they feel during and after treatment. Because a topical anesthetic gel is applied beforehand, patients often feel only a slight sensation of discomfort during treatment.

Following treatment, it usually takes between 3-4 days for patients to fully recover from the procedure. While visible results can often be seen after a single treatment, multiple treatments are required for patients to obtain dramatic changes.

Before undergoing a micro-needling treatment, it’s vital that you schedule a consultation appointment with the Medical Esthetician, Alli Hare, to see if this procedure can adequately address your cosmetic concerns. During this consultation, she will take into account your aesthetic goals, current state of health, and medical history to decide if micro-needling is right for you.

At Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we’re proud to offer our patients a broad range of cosmetic treatments that are both safe and effective — that’s why we offer micro-needling. If you’re interested in learning more about what this exciting treatment can do for you, contact us today.
