How do I Know if my Cyst is Dangerous?

October 10, 2016 by Gregg Bessette

How do I Know if my Cyst is Dangerous?

Able to form on nearly any area of the body, cysts can be both unpleasant to look at and medically dangerous. If you’ve noticed a strange lump beginning to form underneath the surface of your skin, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Having this growth examined can bring you peace of mind knowing it’s harmless, or allow you to begin treatment for the root cause of the cyst as quickly as possible.

Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center is committed to providing all of our patients in the Windermere area of Florida with both diagnostic methods and treatments to have healthy, beautiful skin. Contact us today to schedule a consultation appointment.

What are Cysts?

While there are many different kinds of cysts that can occur within the body, our practice primarily deals with epidermal and pilar cysts. These cysts are sac-like growths that can be filled with gaseous, semisolid, or liquid material and occur just beneath the skin. These cysts can vary dramatically in both size and shape, appearing so small that they are barely visible or as large as a golf ball. Epidermal cysts typically develop on the face, neck, chest, or back, while pilar cysts appear on the scalp.

How do they Form

Cysts can be caused by a number of different factors. As dead skin cells are naturally expelled from the body, they can begin to clog hair follicles. Hair follicles can also become damaged by acne infections, causing a cyst to form in an attempt to heal the infection. Blockage of the sebaceous glands can also cause oil to accumulate, leading to the formation of a cyst.

While many cysts are caused by simple blockages of the pores, oil glands, and hair follicles, others can be the result of outside conditions. Because of this, it’s important that you have any suspicious cysts examined as soon as possible.

How do I know if my Cyst is Dangerous?

While most cysts are harmless, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Cysts may be symptomatic of more severe medical conditions that can be deadly if left untreated. If you notice an abnormal growth beginning to develop underneath your skin, it’s important that you don’t dismiss it as harmless.

Our medical professionals at Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center can provide patients with one-on-one thorough examinations of their cysts. While most cysts can be cleared as harmless with just a visual examination, biopsies are sometimes needed.

Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center is proud to bring high-quality skin care to patients in the Windermere area of Florida. If you’d like more information about our practice or are interested in scheduling a skin examination, contact us today!
