Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States today. Fortunately, it is almost always treatable with the right combination of skin care treatments. Because some cases of acne can be managed without ever stepping foot in a dermatologist’s office, it can be difficult for people suffering from this condition to know exactly when it’s time for them to seek out professional treatment.
At Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, our goal is to help provide patients suffering from a wide range of skin conditions with the information, treatments, and skin care products they need to lead happy, healthy lives. What Causes Acne?
Acne can be caused by a number of different factors, many of them simultaneously responsible for the papules and pustules characteristic of acne. Stress and hormones are thought to play a large role in the formation of acne. Regardless of the cause, different factors all seem to trigger abnormal behavior in the pores of the skin.
Acne forms when the body begins to create too much sebum, or oil within the skin’s pores. In healthy, normal skin, dead skin cells rise to the surface of pores and are expelled from the body entirely. In acne-prone skin, these dead skin cells become stuck together because of the excess sebum present in the pores. These cells clump together, becoming lodged within the pore. This causes irritation that leads to the formation of an acne lesion.
Acne can also be caused by the presence of the bacteria P. acnes. This bacteria can begin to multiply within the pores, causing inflammation and irritation within them.
When is it Time to Seek out Treatment?
For some people, the development of acne is a relatively short occurrence that subsides during their teen years. For others, acne can be a continuous problem throughout their lives. Whether your acne is an ongoing issue or a short-term annoyance, professional acne treatment can help promote lifelong skin health and wellness. Acne left untreated can get worse and result in acne scars that last a lifetime. The sooner you have your acne addressed by a physician, the better off your skin is likely to look in the long run.
