Eczema Symptoms

eczema

Eczema is a skin disorder that affects over 30 million Americans. Also referred to as atopic dermatitis, this skin condition can begin during infancy, childhood, or adulthood. Once it develops in an individual, it usually stays with them for the rest of their lives. While the exact cause of eczema is unknown and there is no cure, the first step in managing your case is confirming that you do indeed have eczema. This can be done by comparing your symptoms with some of the most common symptoms associated with eczema described below.

Located in Windermere FL, Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center is dedicated to providing our patients with the highest standard of dermatological care. We offer skin assessments for individuals that suspect that they have eczema and comprehensive treatment plans for those that do. Itchiness

A persistent, itchy sensation is probably the most common symptom of eczema. Often times, this sensation can appear before any visible manifestations of the condition do. The urge to scratch can sometimes be so intense that people can cause their skin to bleed. This, in turn, can lead to more intense symptoms that further intensify the desire to scratch.

Dry, Sensitive Skin

The itchy sensation characteristic of eczema is made worse by the dry, sensitive patches of skin that often accompany it. These patches of dry skin can crop up on nearly any area of the body, but are most common in areas that are bent and flexed frequently. These include the knees, neck, wrists, and ankles. These body parts can get so dry that flakey skin that is light in color often begins to develop.

Red, Recurring Rash

Red, recurring rashes often form in individuals that suffer from eczema. While these rashes can be concentrated in a particular area at first, they often move to other parts of the body. This happens through a relatively sporadic and random process.

While eczema can be a difficult condition to deal with both physically and emotionally, its symptoms can be controlled fairly successfully as long as it is correctly diagnosed and dealt with. If you’d like to have your case of eczema officially diagnosed by a Dermatologist, Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center can help. We can also offer advice on the best ways to manage and control your symptoms. Contact us today for more information!
