Treating Pre-Cancerous Growths with Blu-Light Therapy

Blu-Light Therapy

When it comes to maintaining your skin health and preventing skin cancer, early detection and treatment is key. When abnormal growths are present on your skin, it is important to have them examined and treated as soon as possible. At the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, our Blu-Light treatment can safely and effectively target pre-cancerous growths on the face and scalp.

These growths should be diagnosed and treated by a licensed dermatologist. Doctor Jeannette Hudgens and her medical team specialize in several skin conditions and can accurately identify and treat pre-cancerous growths to restore your skin health.

What is Blu-Light Treatment?

Also commonly referred to as photodynamic therapy, Blu-Light treatment has been heralded as one of the most innovative dermatological advancements in the past 10 years. This unique treatment combines photosensitizer, light and tissue oxygen technology to kill damaged skin cells.

Prior to treatment, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed to allow maximum penetration. A levulinic acid solution is then applied to the skin and left to set for about an hour. This photosensitizing agent is activated by the blue light, targeting and destroying growths before they develop into cancer cells.

Your skin will be exposed to the light for about 15-20 minutes, and you may feel a slight burning sensation as your skin cells are treated. To increase your comfort, cooling solutions are available.

If pre-cancerous growths are caught early enough, Blu-Light treatment can completely remove them as effectively as surgery. During your consultation with Dr. Hudgens, she will examine your growths and determine if Blu-Light treatment is the best course of action for your skin.

What Are the Benefits of Blu-Light Treatment?

In comparison to other alternatives, photodynamic therapy offers several benefits to the patient:

Is There Any Recovery Time?

After Blu-Light treatment, patients need to avoid sun exposure for 48 hours. The lesions should peel off within one week and the redness should fade in 2-3 weeks. Dr. Hudgens will monitor your results and follow-up appointments will be scheduled if necessary.

At the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we offer both medical and cosmetic services to restore and maintain your skin health. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hudgens and find out if Blu-Light treatment is right for you.
