Skincare Tips for Winter in Florida

Winter Skincare

If you suffer from sensitive skin, you already know that changes in weather can drastically affect its condition. While Florida is more forgiving than other places that experience extreme cold in the winter months, the chilly air that comes with Florida “winters” can still present a problem to your skin. This is because even though Florida’s coldest temperature typically doesn’t dip below 61 ͒ F, this colder-than-usual temperature brings with it dry air that Florida’s residents are not accustomed to.

The good news is that this change in weather doesn’t have to affect your skin in a dramatic way. Taking a few simple precautions can help you gear up for the dry air that the Florida winter brings and keep your skin looking and feeling great year-round.

Moisturize Your Skin

If you live in Florida, your skin is accustomed to humid air that helps keep it moisturized. The dryness of winter air in comparison with this wet, warm air can be jarring to your skin, especially if you experience skin dryness year round. To help your skin adjust to this change, it’s important to moisturize more than usual.

But because of this temperature difference, your regular moisturizer may not be strong enough to protect your skin on chilly winter days. Try experimenting with oil-based moisturizers during this time to find one that works well for you.

Unlike traditional water-based moisturizers, oil-based moisturizers create a protective barrier between your skin and the outside world. This barrier retains more moisture than a cream or lotion, so your skin can stay moisturized for longer. The most effective of these moisturizers contain humectants and emollients, so be sure to pick up one with these ingredients.

Don’t Forget about Sunscreen

If you live in Florida, you’re probably already well-acquainted with its characteristically harsh sunlight and warm weather. Chilly winter days can be a welcome refuge from the heat, but it’s important to keep your skin protected – the sun can still harm your skin, even if it’s not as hot as usual outside. Choose a sunscreen that’s broad-spectrum, and make sure to apply it 30 minutes before you go outside to ensure its effectiveness.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day – this extra hydration can help your skin combat the drying effects of the chilly winter air. Eating Omega-3’s during this time can help maximize this hydration. Be sure to cut down on your consumption of caffeine and alcohol, as these can dehydrate you.
