At Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we use a state-of-the-art device called SkinPen® for our microneedling procedures, which all are done in-office at our Windermere, Florida location. Here’s what you need to know about this revolutionary new application of a very old concept.
How Does Micro-Needling Work?
The concept is easy to understand if you think about how the skin heals from scrapes or minor cuts. Within days, natural processes go to work repairing the damage, healing it over with brand new skin cells and using the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin to create a fresh, smooth surface.
Micro-needling is a completely non-invasive method of skin rejuvenation that uses tiny, almost invisible needles to penetrate the skin to a certain depth, which can be adjusted depending on what problem is being treated. There’s little to no pain or blood, but the tiny pinpricks from the microneedle stimulate the body’s natural response and bring fresh collagen and healing factors to the surface to repair damage.
The SkinPen®
We use the SkinPen® method of microneedling because our Orlando-area patients report great success rates using this cutting-edge process. The device resembles a pen, that passes gently over the skin in the treated area and creates tiny microchannels that induce collagen to move to the area throughout the dermal layers. The collagen and elastin then heal the microchannels and age- or sun-damaged skin in the area, with no surgery or extensive downtime needed.

Any Downsides?

However, skin flushing or redness, similar to a mild sunburn, commonly takes place after the treatment, and can last up to a few days. For stubborn scarring or long-term treatment of a condition, multiple treatments may be needed to achieve the desired results.
