What are Cysts?
While there are many different kinds of cysts that can occur within the body, our practice primarily deals with epidermal and pilar cysts. These cysts are sac-like growths that can be filled with gaseous, semisolid, or liquid material and occur just beneath the skin. These cysts can vary dramatically in both size and shape, appearing so small that they are barely visible or as large as a golf ball. Epidermal cysts typically develop on the face, neck, chest, or back, while pilar cysts appear on the scalp.
How do they Form
Cysts can be caused by a number of different factors. As dead skin cells are naturally expelled from the body, they can begin to clog hair follicles. Hair follicles can also become damaged by acne infections, causing a cyst to form in an attempt to heal the infection. Blockage of the sebaceous glands can also cause oil to accumulate, leading to the formation of a cyst.
