July is UV Safety Month

medical-grade products

Long summer days are relaxing and invigorating, and the temptation is definitely there to soak up all the beautiful sunshine. And that’s fine — we love hearing how you’re enjoying your summer! But, it’s important to be safety-conscious about how much UV damage you’re exposing your skin to. UV rays are the leading cause of all types of skin cancer, after all.

Since we all want to get out and enjoy the sunny weather, there are a few things to keep in mind about limiting any sun damage that may happen to your skin as a result.

  1. Wear sunscreen! If you’re not sure what type of sunscreen you should be using, talk to Dr. Hudgens or the staff at Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center. We typically recommend at least SPF 30, and can also help you find one that suits your skin’s specific needs.
  2. Wear it right. Apply sunscreen before you go outside, not once you’re already getting red. Remember to cover all the areas that might get sun exposure, don’t just give your arms a swipe and hope for the best. Sensitive skin on the face, neck, chest and hands is more delicate and prone to accumulating damage.
  3. Choose wisely. If you have other skin issues, like rosacea, sensitive skin, acne or want to combine your high-quality sunscreen with high-quality color correction, let us help you pick the right one. Revision Intellishade products blend perfectly to the color of your skin, while the Multi-Protection sunscreen also fights signs of aging and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
  4. Double up on sun protection. If you know you’ll be outside for a long day of golfing, beachgoing or other outdoor fun, there’s nothing wrong with applying sunscreen and also breaking out sun protective clothing, like the Coolibar clothing products we recommend to many of our Orlando-area clients. Hats, summer clothing and plenty of other options keep you cool, protected and cute all at the same time.
  5. Keep skin clean and clear. Many people are leery of sunscreen causing breakouts, but our dermatologist-recommended formulations don’t clog pores, and there are even formulas that apply without any kind of greasy feeling. We often recommend SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense for clients with sensitive skin, as it’s lightweight, carries a big UV-protection punch, and won’t clog pores or result in acne.

We also offer multiple medical-grade products including spray-on sunscreen, UV-defense lip balm, and sport-formulated sunscreen, and Colorescience Sunforgettable products for all skin colors to help you combine sun protection and the perfect make-up look.

All the products we carry at Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, located in Windermere, Florida, are medical-grade sun protection tools for UV protection and repair. Talk to our staff or Dr. Hudgens to find out what would be best for your skin.

Contact us anytime with UV or sun protection questions — we’d so much rather help you now than treat you for skin cancer later!
