How Hormonal Changes Affect Acne Development

hormonal-acne

Acne is caused by a variety of internal factors — hormones being one of them. Hormonal changes can affect acne development in a variety of largely predictable ways. Understanding these patterns can better equip you to prepare your skin for the onset hormonal acne, and help prevent it in the future. Some of these indicators of hormonal acne to be aware of are the timing, location, and appearance of your breakouts. Additionally, hormonal acne responds in characteristic ways to traditional treatment options.

Located in Windermere FL, Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center is committed to providing patients with the highest standard of skin care. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Timing

If acne has some hormonal cause, it will often appear at predictable, regular intervals that correspond to the cyclical nature of human hormones. In women, these intervals correlate with the different phases of the menstrual cycle. The week before their menstrual cycle begins is usually when acne is at its worst. Others experience their most severe acne flare ups during menses or ovulation.

Location

The areas on the face that acne develops can reveal information about its cause. Hormonal acne is typically located beneath the cheekbones and along the jawline, while pimples across the forehead and bridge of the nose are more likely related to bacterial or inflammation issues.

Appearance

Hormonal acne typically looks different. This type of acne is distinct from other types of acne. It is often deep and cystic. Pain or pressure can be felt in this type of acne even when you’re not touching it or just gently washing your face. Since hormonal acne is the most likely to leave scars, it’s important to resist popping these pimples.

Response to Treatment

If topical and antibiotic acne treatments don’t have much of an effect on your acne, there is a good chance it is primarily being caused by a hormonal imbalance or fluctuation. Hormonal acne also tends to either get dramatically better or worse in women if they begin a hormonal birth control regimen.

If you suspect that your acne may be caused in part by hormonal fluctuations, we can help. Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center specializes in providing patients with high quality, comprehensive dermatological care. Contact us today to schedule your initial consultation.
