What are Cysts?

Cysts are closed capsule structures, filled with either liquid, semisolid, or gaseous material. While they can be aesthetically unappealing, cysts are relatively common, can appear anywhere on the body, and are nearly always noncancerous. There are many different kinds of cysts, so each looks and develops a little differently. As a whole, cysts are usually slow-growing, painless, and smooth to the touch.

When Should I Seek Medical Help for a Cyst?

Cysts usually do not go away on their own, so if you have a cyst that you don’t like the appearance of, you may choose to have it removed. While cysts are typically benign and only harmful in that they’re aesthetically unappealing, there are some signs that signal you should get a cyst checked out. If your cyst becomes painful, red, or oozes fluid this could be a sign of rupture or infection — seek the medical advice of a doctor immediately. They will be able to examine your cyst, decide if it needs to be removed or not, and discuss the treatment options available to you.

What Treatments are Available for Cysts?

Typically, treatment for cysts involves a simple draining process. While this can temporarily relieve symptoms, the cyst may grow back after a period of time. Cysts are sometimes treated with an injection of cortisone medication that causes them to shrink. If a cyst does not respond to traditional treatment, it can usually be removed surgically.
