Benefits of Blu-Light Therapy Skin Treatments

Blu-Light Therapy

Have you noticed precancerous growths cropping up on your skin? Or maybe you’re concerned by the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, or pores. Fortunately, there’s a non-invasive therapy that can treat all of these conditions and more: Blu-Light Therapy.

At Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center in Windermere, we offer Blu-Light therapy not only to help combat skin cancer, rosacea, and actinic keratoses, but also to improve the overall quality of your skin.

What is Blu-Light Therapy?

Blu-light therapy is a specific kind of photodynamic therapy. It uses a photosensitizing agent (levulinic acid), light, and oxygen to treat precancerous cells, actinic keratoses, as well as other non-cancerous skin conditions.

The area of skin undergoing treatment is first prepped with a photosensitizing agent. After the skin completely absorbs this photosynthesizing agent, a carefully selected frequency of blue light is shone on it. The light causes the drug to react with oxygen, forming a chemical that destroys the cells in the area.

Blu-Light Therapy Treats Both Medical & Cosmetic Problems

While Blu-Light therapy is most typically used to halt the development of cancer, it has been known to alleviate the symptoms of both Acne Vulgaris and Rosacea. These conditions are typically too sensitive to treat with other methods, making Blu-Light therapy an especially valuable tool for combatting them.

In addition to treating these specific conditions, Blu-light therapy can improve the overall quality of your skin. The treatment is known to:

Blu-Light Therapy is Safe

Considering the range of conditions Blu-Light therapy can treat, you would think the procedure would have major drawbacks. Fortunately, this isn’t true: Blu-Light therapy is remarkably safe.

It is both non-invasive and precise, and unlike other procedures, Blu-Light therapy only targets the areas of skin that require treatment, leaving the surrounding, healthy tissue unchanged and undamaged.

While short-term side effects are typical and similar to those associated with sunburn, they are mild and should subside quickly. There are no known long-term side effects of Blu-light therapy.

Whether the goal is to prevent skin cancer before it develops, or just to keep you looking young and refreshed, Blu-light therapy is a successful treatment option. At Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, we’ll discuss your goals for treatment with you, and evaluate if Blu-Light therapy is right for your medical and cosmetic needs.
